The producer, artistic director, and an educator at The Freedom Theatre in Jenin were kidnapped alongside over 100 other Palestinians today (13 Dec 23). The Freedom Theatre is a hub of cultural resistance and artistic community in the occupied West Bank.
Join me in calling on theatre institutions to demand the immediate release of these kidnapped artists. Here's the email I'm sending; feel free to copy but please adjust the phrasing to avoid spam filters: "Today in Jenin refugee camp, The Freedom Theatre's artistic director Ahmed Tobasi, producer Mustafa Sheta, and acting teacher Jamal Abu Joas were taken hostage by the Israeli army alongside over one hundred other Palestinian civilians. This follows the murder of three Freedom Theatre artists in the last few weeks: Yamen Jarrar (17), Jehad Naghniyeh (26), and Mohammed Matahen (30). The global theatre community must stand up in support of artists persecuted by the occupation regime. There is extensive documentation of torture in Israeli occupation detention centers. I urge [name of organization] to issue a public statement demanding the immediate release of these hostages. Here's a recent article about The Freedom Theatre's work with traumatized children: [AJ link above]" I'm also adding a brief statement from my perspective as a theatre artist, expressing my disappointment in my local and national theatre scene for its silence. If you're a theatre artist or theatre-goer I encourage you to do the same! The international and US institutions I'm emailing: International Society for the Performing Arts - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] International Theatre Institute - [email protected], [email protected] International Amateur Theatre Association - [email protected] Theatre Without Borders - [email protected] ASSITEJ - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] International Federation for Theatre Research - [email protected] IDEA- [email protected] International Schools Theatre Association - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Theatre for Young Audiences USA - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] American Association of Community Theatre - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] American Theatre Wing - [email protected], [email protected] American Theatre Magazine - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] American Alliance for Theatre and Education - [email protected] American Society for Theatre Research - [email protected], [email protected] Theater of War - [email protected], [email protected] Actors' Equity - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] The Broadway League - [email protected] PEN America - [email protected], [email protected] Please also email organizations where you live, and any personal contacts in the performing arts. Bulgaria’s two-year period of repeat elections appeared to have come an end on Tuesday as a joint government created by political opponents GERB/United Democratic Forces and We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria was approved by parliament.
The new government came to power with 132 votes in favour and 69 against.
The two blocs, which are each other’s main foes, will take office with a cabinet that will govern for 18 months.
It will be led for the first nine months by We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria, with Nickolay Denkov as prime minister, and for the second nine months by GERB/United Democratic Forces, with Denkov resigning and Mariya Gabriel stepping in.
Since early 2021 Bulgaria has endured repeated elections and rounds of failed coalition talks, only briefly interrupted by the nine-month reformist coalition administration led by We Continue the Change with Kiril Petkov as prime minister.
Both GERB/United Democratic Forces and We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria have framed the partnership as a compromise for Bulgaria’s future.
“We have far too many dividing lines with GERB and they won’t disappear just because we’re creating a cabinet,” Hristo Ivanov, leader of Democratic Bulgaria, said in parliament.
Ivanov said he sees the new government as an “interim cabinet but one selected by parliament” and a way for the parliament to have an extended life in which reforms can be passed.
President Rumen Radev remains highly skeptical of the unlikely union, however.
“I hope that parliament won’t betray the national interests in the same way the leaders of the coalition have already betrayed their voters,” said Radev, who in 2021 helped We Continue the Change’s Kiril Petkov and Assen Vassilev launch their career in politics by choosing them in his interim cabinet before the duo established their own party.
After We Continue the Change won elections in November 2021 and expressed a pro-Ukraine and pro-military aid stance, Radev turned vehemently against the coalition led by Petkov.
Radev’s tone was emulated by There’s Such a People, whose MP Filip Stanev called the new cabinet “the league of extraordinary frauds”.
Pro-Kremlin parties Revival and Bulgarian Socialist Party were also heavily critical of the new government.
Kornelia Ninova, leader of the Socialists, showed her disdain for the new cabinet by reading a statement generated by ChatGPT and describing the government as a “one-armed, double-headed Frankenstein”.
Revival leader Kostadin Kostadinov said that We Continue the Change’s members should be arrested for a “velvet coup d’ètat” for “collaborating with the US”, referring to a leaked audiotape in which party members were heard discussing coordination with unspecified embassies.
Surprisingly, MPs from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms party, which is focused on the Turkish diaspora and is a traditional ally to GERB, only cast two votes in favour of the cabinet – those of leader Mustafa Karadaya and Magnitsky-sanctioned, Pandora Papers-exposed oligarch Delyan Peevski.
Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev continues to put pressure on the new government.
On Tuesday, the prosecution said it was investigating Petkov for being nominated as interim Economy Minister in 2021 in a breach of the constitution because he held a dual Bulgarian and Canadian citizenship. Petkov stated that he is ready to give up his political immunity. A previous investigation by the prosecution in 2021 said that there was no wrongdoing.
The prosecution has previously looked into the allegation that GERB leader Boyko Borissov was involved in money-laundering. On Tuesday, the prosecution said that there is new evidence in the case, connected to schemes in Turkey.

Under the leadership of Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the republic allowed for the unfettered production of opium, morphine, and heroin through the 1920s. League of Nations member states raged against Turkey’s intransigence, arguing that the country was responsible for selling up to 480 tons of illicit opium annually between 1925 and 1930. [...] Kurdish and European-based drug trafficking syndicates appear to have persisted in their importance and vitality in the three decades following the 1980 coup. Rising heroin usage in major European cities, as well as publicity drawn from several notorious criminal cases, shed a larger international spotlight upon the strength and invasiveness of Turkish-led heroin networks.
European and American inquiries into the 1981 attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II led to wide-ranging discussions of the criminal history and associates of Mehmet Ali Ağca, the pope’s would-be assassin. Ağca’s relationship with drug traffickers in Bulgaria led to a small stream of official and journalistic investigations into the links forged between Turkish smugglers and members of Italy’s various crime groups.
Later, with the fall of the Iron Curtain, European authorities observed the growing influence of Turkish nationals in regional distribution networks, including street dealing. Still other cases, such as the 1992 apprehension of Hüseyin Baybaşin, a PKK-linked heroin smuggler, affirmed Ankara’s position that heroin smuggling had become an industry dominated by Kurdish militants.
With the escalation of the PKK’s armed campaign against the Turkish state after 1984, Turkish officials maintained that 90 percent of the cases brought against drug smugglers in the country involved PKK sponsorship. Even after the 1998 apprehension of the PKK leader, Abdullah Öçalan, Turkish officials continued to assert that Kurdish militants were engaged at all levels of the heroin trade, be it production, taxing, smuggling, or retailing the drug in European cities.

The Young Turks adopted an anti-slavery stance in the early 20th century.[69] Sultan Abdul Hamid II's personal slaves were freed in 1909 but members of his dynasty were allowed to keep their slaves. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ended legal slavery in the Turkish Republic. Turkey waited until 1933 to ratify the 1926 League of Nations convention on the suppression of slavery. Nonetheless, illegal sales of girls were reportedly continued at least into the early 1930s. Legislation explicitly prohibiting slavery was finally adopted in 1964.

Muscular would not stand a chance if Midoriya went all-out. The trick is that Midoriya is terrified of going all-out, especially around the League because he sure as fuck knows what a Noumu is! And Kota is there to see him do it, too
